About the Artist

Shirley Metcalf

Artist in Fiber, Art Quilts, Travel

Shirley Metcalf’s fiber paintings integrate the use of traditional and non-traditional painting materials.  She creates works using a process adapted from machine lace making techniques, printmaking and collage.  Her experimental methods emanate from her experiences as a fine artist and mechanical engineer.    With a newly built studio in Common Fence Point, Shirley works in fiber, surface design and art quilting.  She was born and raised in Massachusetts and returned to Aquidneck Island with her husband of 36 years as full-time residents four years ago, after living in Norfolk, CT, where she maintained a fiber studio, showed her work and ran a long arm quilting business for many years.
Shirley has exhibited her art in juried shows throughout Connecticut and nationally:  Norfolk Library, Norfolk, CT, The Museum of Contemporary Art at Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, CT, the Target Gallery, Alexandria, VA, Northwestern Community College, Winsted, CT, The Gallery on the Green, Canton, CT, Manchester Community College, Manchester, CT and the Silpe and Joseloff Galleries at the University of Hartford, Hartford, CT.
In addition to her BFA from the University of Hartford, Shirley holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY. She began her engineering career on the island at NWUC and Raytheon before relocating to Northwest CT, where she raised three children and began her professional art career.
Shirley and her husband are elated to be back in RI where they enjoy sailing, travel, gardening and the amazing CFP neighborhood.  Shirley greatly appreciates this opportunity to display this exhibit “Odonata Illusions,” originally shown in 2009, in the CFP hall, a place of happiness, health, community and creativity!
